Synevyr
The largest mountain lake in Ukraine, Synevyr, is located at the height of 989 meters above sea level. The lake is 7 hectares in size and has an average depth of 16-17 m, with a maximum of 24 m. It was formed as a result of a powerful shift caused by an earthquake, about ten thousand years ago.
Some say there is also a wonderful legend behind the appearance of Synevyr lake. It says that the lake was made from tears of the count’s daughter — Syn’, on the place where the simple shepherd Vyr, her beloved, was killed. Come and find out if this is the truth!
This natural beauty surrounded by amazing mountains has become the center of Ukraine’s biggest national parks (totaling 43 hectares in size, with 53 plant species and 43 animal species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine). The forest surrounding the lake is estimated to be 140-160 years old. Now an interesting fact! There you can find a tiny island in the middle of the lake with the Sea Eye (‘Morske Oko’) inside — an area of a few square meters.
You will definitely find what you seek by the Synevyr lake — be it wandering, exploring flora and fauna or even deepening your history knowledge on the unique ‘Arpad line’ tourist route. Fortifications and machine-gun points from WW2 times are waiting for you there.
